Smartphone makers are already considering replacing headphone jack with USB-C connectOR, even Apple is rumored to be amongst the list. Moto Z has already thrown away the 3.5mm audio jack.

Replacement of headphone jack with USB-C or any competitor is going to be a hard change to introduce because people are so much used to the typical 3.5mm audio jack, they can’t imagine life without it. But Intel says it is the future of audio and video output so consumers should not be concerned. Tt is all for technological advancement.

The biggest restriction with the typical audio jack is that it limits the slimness of smartphones to never go below 3.5mm; comparatively, USB-C connector is just 2.6mm thick. Furthermore, the new port can also help improve noise cancelling and bass boosting capability of audio ports. USB-C also services as a charger and is also said to have video streaming capabilities, which might not replace HDMI now but it could in the future. Last but not the least, it can handle multiple connections so you can charge, video stream, and listen to music at the same time.

Currently, USB-C connector is only used in nominal smartphones and laptops including the new Apple Macbook.
