It’s that time of the year again; MWC 2016 has ended giving us two phones that will probably be two best-selling Android phones of 2016. As you probably guessed, those two models are Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and LG’s G5. Both phones are proper Android powerhouses, with top notch mobile chips, beautiful QHD (2560×1440) displays, plenty of RAM and excellent cameras. But no matter how much they are similar, differences exist and we’ll try to point them out in this text. Display
S7 packs a 5.1-inch screen with QHD resolution, with their famous Super AMOLED display. Super AMOLED displays can produce warmer colors; they have more natural looking black color, are less power hungry, at least in theory and have better viewing angles. Display density is 577 pixels per inch, a bit larger than on G5, but to be honest, unless you have to power of ultra-vision, you won’t see the difference between pixel density of S7 and G5.
G5 has a slightly bigger, 5.3 inches display. LG is a fan of IPS technology so it is logical to see that G5 has IPS LCD display. IPS displays offer better whites (whites on AMOLED displays can have a yellowish tint), more natural looking colors (colors on AMOLED displays can get over-saturated) and they have great visibility in direct sunlight. Pixel density on G5 is a bit smaller that on S7 (display is slightly larger 5.3 inches vs. 5.1 inch seen on S7) with “just” 554 pixels per inch, but again if you are a normal human being you won’t see the difference.
Dimensions, RAM, Chipset
Samsung Galaxy S7 measures 142.4 x 69.6 x 7.9 mm and weighing 152 grams. G5 dimensions are 149.4 x 73.9 x 7.7 mm, weight is 159 grams. As you can see G5 is just so slightly bigger and heavier but is at the same time thinner than S7. While there is not much of a difference in dimension, S7 should be better for people with smaller hands, because of its smaller size and display.
Both phones pack 4GB of Ram, which should be enough even for the most demanding apps and games. And 4 gigs of RAM should be future proof at least in the next two or three years.
Snapdragon 820 paired with Adreno 530 graphics chip is inside both phones. In theory, the performance should be the same, but there might be some differences, especially because both S7 and G5 use their own Android UI’s. Whoever did better optimization of their UI will come out as a winner.
Camera
Samsung Galaxy S7 has a 12 pixels main camera, front facing camera has 5 megapixels. G5, on the other hand, has a bit more megapixels, its main camera has 16 and front facing one has 8. Although LG has more megapixels, S7 has larger pixels on the camera sensor (something similar to the Ultrapixel camera that HTC presented with its ONE series), enabling it to take better shots in low light conditions. But, if they are both good enough, there will be no big difference between them.
Storage, Battery, Design
S7 will come with 32 and 64 GB of storage, LG G5 will have only 32 GB model. This isn’t so important because both phones have memory card slots, supporting cards up to 200 GB. Lots of storage, if you ask me.
S7 offers a non-removable 3000 mAh battery. G5, one the other side has a slightly smaller battery, with 2800 mAh capacity, but its battery is removable a tangible advantage.
Both phones bodies are made from metal, so durability will not be questioned. The advantage of S7 is its IP67 certification, making it both water and dust resistant, LG lacks in that area.
Additional Features
Both phones have fingerprint sensors, a normal thing to see on flagship phones in 2016. S7 also has “Motion Photos” option, something similar to Apple’s “Live Photos”.
LG G5 offers a modular battery system that supports adding new features and options to the phone. For instance, if you want better photos, plug in a better camera module. Your battery can’t provide you with a whole day of usage? Simply remove your current battery module and slide in a bigger one. This feature is called LG Friends and can really make the difference between these two models. LG plans to introduce more modules as time passes by, so we can’t wait to see what the guys from LG will think of next.
Conclusion
Although S7 looks a bit better, is water and dirt resistant, the modular nature of G5 makes him a better phone, at least, to us. The ability to add a new battery, a professional camera, or a powerful amp that will grant you superior audio quality can be a winning feature.
